Design stage
Five devices, simulated in software
Each one gives an animal something to do with a signal it already makes, so a choice can run both ways. They are designs and software simulations. A build waits on accredited facilities, qualified animal-care staff, permits, and ethical review. Participation has to be voluntary for the animal. No wild population is disturbed to run a test.
Intermittent-reinforcement fish dispenser
For whales and dolphins in managed care or research. A feeder pays out fish on a variable schedule, so the animal can learn that its own signals and choices make something happen. Payouts are one, two, or three fish. Trainers set the rules and see every payout. It builds on variable reinforcement schedules and on positive-reinforcement training already used with marine mammals.
Beekeeper hive link
For honey bee colonies. A camera on the observation frame reads waggle-run angle and duration into direction and distance. Hive sound and vibration are watched for stress or swarming. A later step answers back with a robotic dancer. The waggle dance is the one animal signal decoded to a place that can be walked to and checked.
Cetacean two-choice playback game
For dolphins and whales. An underwater speaker plays recorded clicks or whistles. The animal chooses between two targets, and a reward follows a correct choice. Signal-detection statistics measure the choice against chance, instead of guessing what the signal meant.
Echolocation feedback game
For dolphins. High-rate hydrophones capture click trains. Trains aimed at a target are classified and answer with light, sound, or a reward, so the dolphin can play by looking with sound.
Button-board telemetry for dogs and cats
For animals at home. Owners already use recordable word buttons. This design logs the sequence and the time, and records voice and movement beside the press, so a sequence can be checked against what the animal was doing. Whether a press carries meaning is still an open question. The device collects the record. It does not claim the animal is talking.
